"In all trends, when the pendulum swings one direction it inevitably swings to the other. So the last 20 years have marked the slow change of taste in the fine art market from one dominated by the various “isms” of Modernism, to a respect and resurgence of traditional representational painting. From the explosion of classical ateliers to the increasing auction prices for 19th century masters such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau, the trend is clearly toward representationalism. As the art world shakes off a century of non-objective domination and embraces its traditional roots, certain historical debates and stylistic differences come to the fore once again. One of those debates dates back to the Renaissance: Disegno vs. Colorito."
